The Otago MBA is delivered on-campus or online:

On-campus MBA: Otago MBA is the only truly full-time MBA program in New Zealand complete with a rigorous academic curriculum, real live cases, professional development workshops, mentor program and networking activities. The full-time Otago MBA is a two-phase program which can be completed in 16 months to 2 years depending on your elective choices in phase two.  Phase one covers twelve core papers.  Elective options in phase two include on-campus electives in Dunedin, international exchange or a business project.

Elective specialisations include: accounting, finance, management, marketing, tourism, healthcare management, entrepreneurship and more.

Online MBA: The Otago Online MBA has been tremendously well-received since it started its first class in 2015. It is based on the same academic curriculum as the well regarded full-time on-campus MBA. With the aim of providing high quality online education, you will attend live weekly lectures, share interactive discussions with your classmates and lecturers, and join in break-out sessions. Should you miss a class, you can catch up with the recordings and be back on track. Career Prospects: Career prospect  for Otago MBA graduates is excellent. The Otago MBA students came from all over the world and worked all over the world after graduation. Their post-study options were diverse - going back to their own home country, going on to work in a third country, or staying to work in New Zealand. The Otago MBA curriculum has a strong emphasis on managing business in a global business environment. They are conducted by outstanding faculty members from different continents - further enhancing that global perspective.

The small classes mean students enjoy an excellent staff to student ratio which ensures a personalised MBA experience. Lecturers are experienced facilitators drawn from three areas - the Otago Business School, other reputable international business schools, and consultants or business practitioners.

Entry Requirements

To ensure all students enjoy the same high quality Otago MBA academic adventure, MBA applicants are required to have:

  • An undergraduate degree (or equivalent or an acceptable level of management experience)
  • A minimum of three years professional / management experience
  • A good GMAT score or B+ average in the Postgraduate Diploma, see below
  • English language proficiency equivalent to a minimum score on IELTS of 6.5, Internet-based TOEFL of 102 or paper-based TOEFL of 600 if English is not your first language.

The Otago Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (a sub-set of the MBA) provides a pathway to the MBA. To gain entry to the Otago Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDipBusAdmin) you will need to have:

  • an undergraduate degree (or equivalent or an acceptable level of management experience)
  • English language proficiency equivalent to an IELTS score of at least 6.5, Internet-based TOEFL of 102 or paper-based TOEFL of 600 if English is not your first language.

Otago MBA has a rolling admission system and applications are considered as they are received. The application process differs from other MBA programs.  There are no admissions essays and no fees to apply.  You do not have to complete your GMAT or IELTS prior to applying.

When shortlisted, you will then be asked for your CV, an interview will be arranged for you and you may be requested to make a presentation over the Internet on a recent news item.

For a reputable and prestigious MBA program, tuition fees are comparatively affordable.

Otago MBA tuition fee for 2017 is about NZ$44,000 for international students. Fees include access to text-books, materials and much more. Online MBA fees can be paid by papers.

There are a number of partial scholarship or assistance opportunities to incoming students. However, application to these scholarships are highly competitive.  You will be expected to have a high GMAT score and A grades in previous academic qualifications.

Dunedin is an open and spacious city. Most housing in and around the city has outdoor areas and gardens and there are no traffic problems so getting around is stress-free. Most MBA students decide to live in the many apartments, studios and shared houses, called flats that nestle around the campus in North Dunedin. You enjoy the youthful vibrancy of Dunedin life, and living within easy walking distance of the Business School and central Dunedin. Others prefer a sea view, quieter setting or a larger family home in a nearby suburb but no one is more than a ten minute drive away from class.

Student life as an on-campus Otago MBA student is exciting and varied. Class trips often include hiking, skiing, boat rides and visiting some of the stunning scenery that surrounds Otago. They have great social events such as shared lunches (with students bringing dishes from their home countries), dinners, and BBQs. The environment of the Otago MBA is very family friendly, so partners and children are welcomed.

The Otago MBA course is based out of an exclusive Executive Programme section of the Business School - with set rooms for students to use at any time, great lecture spaces, kitchen and lounge facilities. It's a great place to study, and is easily accessible.
