MBA OR LLM

wildwind

Hi I am Lily, holding Chinese lawyer license, 3 years working experience in international IT companies for supply chain, and 2 years on legal service. Now I am living in German for family reason, with basic German language skills. In order to find a proper job in Germany, I realized further study is very necessary, for reason of both language improvement and the culture of recruitment in Germany. I am wondering if I should do LLM or MBA here. LLM is of my interest, but seems not job securing based on Germany legal education and practice reality (5 years education and practice + exams, I am 32 years old), MBA sounds more positive for jobs but I really love to work on contracts and giving advices, instead, I am not really interested in managing people and office-politics.

what should I do??

You may be better advised to spend the time learning German. If you want to to legal work in Germany, I would imagine that a new degree like the LLM is not very well recognised, since most lawyers take the states' examinations rather than university degrees.

There are joint programmes in law and business: http://www.bucerius.whu.edu/ is a great example.

Hi Lily - Overall, I think an MBA would be a more effective qualification to enter the German job market. The Bucerius/WHU MBL program that Duncan mentioned is an interesting mix of both aspects.

It might also be interesting to leverage your Chinese background in the European/German business context. But there are no German business schools that I know of with any kind of European-Asia business angle.

Hi Lily,

Tough decision, and will depend on what you ultimately want to do. You might want to check out this site, which offers great insight about LLM degrees:

http://www.llm-guide.com/

Do you want to stay in Germany? In terms of MBA programs, the business school scene has evolved a lot over the past few years. Definitely check these schools out:

Frankfurt School of Finance & Management
WHU - Otto Beisheim Graduate School of Management
EBS Business School

I read the comments and I found really bad words against ESMT .. are they so bad? Next Sunday I have a 30min meeting (I received an invitation from them for the 121connect event) with them ..very curious.

That comment about ESMT is off the mark. I have replied to it. I know a few of the staff at ESMT from LBS and EDHEC, and they are great.

Good answer.. I found hard to believe that an mba run in Berlin and managed by 25 large german companies is a fake!

I think he might have been referring to SIMT, which had a lot of problems.
