Is this a joke post?

If you can get in to Imperial College, then there are any number of top MBAs around Europe that you could also get into before ESMT. ESMT is good, don't get me wrong, but just not in the same league as Imperial College.

In another ten years though the case might be a bit different.

Thanks for your comment, No it wasn't a joke :). I was really impressed with the faculty at ESMT and their foundation companies. So

vikas, have you seen or compare the placement results of esmt? Not promising at all. I have reservation that the founding companies are hiring off esmt, instead, these companies hire from those usual suspects.

Ok, I stand by my earlier post, but I think you are being a bit harsh on ESMT. I have just been looking through their placement report and I think you must have read a different document.

A few stats:
- Average starting salary 80,000 euros
- 90% in employment within 3 months
- Out of 29 participants, 8 returned to original employer and another 10 took a job at one of the founding partners.

I personally wouldn't go to ESMT but just to set the record straight, I think that based on this report they are doing pretty well and have a good record with the founding partners.

Most 2nd tier b-schools would be pleased to have this profile report.

I thought 5 out of 21 seeking employment were still jobless after 3 months. I hope the founding partners are in this for long, otherwise, 50k EUR is quite pricey for a 2nd tier. Imperial is about 35k EUR in comparison.

Without a doubt, Imperial is the better deal, even if the price tags were even.

It sounds like you have some inside experience on this one. I don't, so I can only go on their numbers.

The numbers depend on how you look at it. 5 out 21 puts it at 75%, where as the class was actually 29 people. It doesn't really matter whether 8 of them already had jobs or not. I expect most MBA programmes have their share of people who have jobs to go back to. The fact that their placement is 90% means they are average for the b-schools.

INSEAD have a record of 91% placement for 2006. With a class of nearly 900 people, that means that about 80 people were unemployed at the end of the 3 month period. That would seem more worrying than 5 at ESMT. And in theory, INSEAD's brand is a lot better than ESMT.

I have just tried to find Imperial's placement figures. They don't publish their 3-month percentage but on the FT it is shown as 95%. That only leaves 2 people of the class unemployed. Importantly though, Imperial only provide figures on 83% of the class so that is 8 people unaccounted for.

At least ESMT have been upfront about it.

Hello,
I have read the employment record of ESMT too, and I completely agree with you Jamie, a good result for a second tier b-school.
Why would you not go to ESMT Jamie?

True Jamie,
But Since ESMT is a new school, they are giving greats scholarships in some cases , that I came to know from their admission officer, 75% of total fee.

Scholarships really help! Can't agree more...

Iuri, I did look at ESMT as a possibility but there are a few reasons I decided not to go:
- too much focus on Germany (in recruiters and employment destination)
- I am looking for options in finance or consulting, and finance is not something ESMT seem strong on.
- When I visited, I just didn't like the location...(personal taste)

To give you an idea, I am looking at a number of schools, only in Europe: IESE, ESADE, HEC Paris, Erasmus, Nyenrode and St. Gallen.

That's a good list, so you are only interested by the best European schools!
My criteria are somewhat different, and especially the German focus sounds good to me.

Can you tell me a bit more about the location of ESMT? Since I don't have the occasion to go there to check it out beforehand. That would be nice!

Well, I thought I would start at the top and work down...you'll notice I did miss out a few of the best ones as I don't think my profile is good enough.

I may cross one or two off the list still, and add a couple of different ones. Ideally I would like to apply to 10 schools to give a good range of options.

ESMT is in a relatively impressive building (I only saw the Berlin campus). I seem to remember being told something about the front being part of an old palace that was demolished by the communists.

What I didn't like was that it was in the centre of the city with a lot of old impressive buildings and landmarks but without the feeling of humans actually living near there. I couldn't imagine myself wanting to stay at the building working late at night. It will suit some people and not others.

H Jamie,
I've been to the Berlin campus, and understand what you mean, the building is surrounded by office buildings and not in the middle of a lively neighbourhood with people in the street at night.
But I don't agree, since it is located so much in the center of the city, that everything is at reach, in 5 min walking distance you'll find all kinds different lively neighbourhoods, shopping streets, and restaurants and nightlife. I think it's great to be in a central area instead of an office area in the outskirts or something.
Besides, one of the Berlin Universities is at a 3min distance, so there will be other students around. (although they might not study in their school until as late hours at night as you...)
