The MBA programmes which admit students with no work experience are very weak, so take an MS instead. Syracuse and Fordham are great. Take a look at the media programmes at Brooklyn and Temple as well as well.

I think the careers support will be better at the larger universities. The difference between and MS and an MA is very small.

so new school is not a good option career wise?
I meant MS as opposed to MBA
wat will be diff between the two?

Well, there are two sorts of MBA in the US, and MS degrees come between them.
- Reputable universities require that MBA candidates have years of work experience: their graduates have the best career options.
- Then come other masters degrees at reputable schools, they have the second best - but they are the best option open to you now.
- In last place come MBA programmes which do not require work experience. They are typically run by schools which are not well respected, and have higher costs than MS programmes, so they offer a worse RoI.
The New School will give you a great education, but I think that the bigger universities will have much better careers support.

No, I think the one year programmes are well designed. However if you need an internship then look carefully at what the school helps with.

Hi,
This is Oindrila from India. I've done BA in Mass communication and MA in audio visual communication. Also I've 3 years of work experience in television industry.
I don't want to do MBA, so should I go for MS in media management? How helpful it will be for my career?
please advice.
regards,
Oindrila

What sort of work would you like to do? In which country?
Posted Dec 15, 2011 07:09
I'm into production. Making fiction and non fiction shows, planning and execution. Right now working in India with a UK based company called 'Fremantle media'.
But I want to switch from production part and want to get into Media business. Interested in media marketing, planning, strategy etc...

Well, an MBA will not help you with those things. I think you will need to ask people in your own country and industry to get ideas for progression. This website is about MBAs.

I'm a mass media postgraduate with a graduation in English Honours. I'm currently working in a reputed print media company in INDIA as a sub editor where my work involves a diverse range of work responsibilities including writing, editing, conceptualizing, handling PR etc.
I want to pursue higher studies in mass media (PHD in Mass Media, Masters in Media Management, Masters in corporate communications) to fulfill my carrier goal as a media person.

If you want to work in the media, don't take a PhD. A PhD trains professors.
What sort of role would you like to have? On the basis of your post, I think a masters in journalism might be best.

i have already completed my 2 year masters degree in media with a specialisation in journalism. m looking for higher studies where i can understand the dynamics of media management industry in a better fashion. however, in the long run i would want to venture into academics and research area, so should i opt for another masters (now in media management)or go directly for phd? please suggest

Yes if your professional skills are already developed, the PhD route is the right one. You may need to start through a research masters, like an MPhil or MRes.
