What is your opinion of Northumbria University?

Hello all! This is my first post on here after much lurking and my question is about Northumbria University.

I've received an offer to do an Msc Business with Marketing and want to know if it's worth going there. What is your opinion of their business school? The course will be based in their London campus and I'm also eligible for a bursary.

I know there are better B-schools out there but my background is in journalism and my work experience (2 years) is in the field of PR and journalism. However, I'd like to venture more into the business marketing side and eventually start something of my own and feel like this degree will back me up.

On that note, I've also received a place to study Entrepreneurship, Finance and Innovation at Loughborough University (postgrad campus in London) and am currently awaiting a reply from Cranfield University for Msc Management and Entrepreneurship. I considered applying to Cass but the fees are too expensive for me as an international student.

Anyhow, my aim is to work on my start up and secure a Graduate Entrepreneur visa which will allow me to stay on in the UK. (I've also received an offer for International Business w Entrepreneurship at Kingston and they're the #1 uni for graduate startups in the UK. Should I accept the offer even though Kingston is constantly ranked at the bottom of league tables) Would the uni I go to really matter if I plan to start my own business and not work for the big 4? Please advice.

I don't understand what you would willingly invest a year of your time in an experience that you know will be inferior. If the education does not matter, and you just want to spend a year in London, then I am sure there are cheaper options. But if the education matters, then go where the cohort, teachers, etc will be the best.

I am not sure what is means that Kingston is #1 in anything other than volume. On its website there is a reference to this study but the report on that page does not mention Kingston http://www.hefce.ac.uk/pubs/Year/2015/201513/Title,104688,en.html if we mean that more undergraduates set up business after Kingston than any other, well that surely reflects the fact that Kingston is the biggest undergraduate university in Greater London (where youth-led start-ups are concentrated, partly because of the over-supply of talent in the capital). It has more undergrads than Oxford!

Not necessarily saying Northumbria is inferior, but in comparison to UCL, LBS and the likes it is not really up there. I had an offer from Birkbeck but seeing as they no longer sponsor the graduate entrepreneur visa, it doesn't make sense for me to go there if my aim is to stay on and start my business here.

So, overall, would you recommend Northumbria's business school?

I would not recommend it over a better option. And there are so many: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/517747/HEI_List_for_April_2016.pdf

Ok thanks for the input, I've put Northumbria at the bottom of my list.

Anyhow, I'm still awaiting a reply from Cranfield and I just found out that they can sometimes take up to 2 months to reply with an offer. What should I do? Because as an international student I have to apply for CAS number and I have until early the first week of June to reply to all my other offers. At the same time, if I do get Cranfield, I don't want to pay a deposit to the other unis just yet. What should I do?

How hard is it to get into Cranfield if you're from a non business background?

Two months? They turn around the eligibility check (http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/Forms/Page-Template-for-Radius-Eligibility-Check-Form) in two days. Contact Hilary Browne if you have done the check and not heard back.

I don't think it's easier for business undergrads to get into that Cranfield programme.

So I've got an interview with Cranfield!!! Does anyone know what sort of questions they'll ask? How tough is it? If you've made it to the interview stage, that's a positive right? Or is that just standard? Do I have to dress up for a skype interview? Like formal clothes?

See: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1915019 Yes, very positive. Dress formally. Get someone to role-play with you. Perhaps put keywords on post-its either side of the web-cam?
