UCD Smurfit MBA vs University of Edinburgh MBA (with exchange)

Amidd

hey guys!

I currently hold offers from both these schools. They seem comparable on past FT global MBA ranking (they've both been out of top 100 for last 2 years!!), but in their specific locations, UCD has an edge in Ireland, whereas UK has a lot of leading business schools. However, Edinburgh has amazing connections with best business schools for exchange program. But, UCD is a member of GNAM. Edinburgh has now permanently adopted a hybrid model of teaching whereas UCD will be more engaging, if there are no COVID restrictions. Edinburgh is a bigger global brand because of the uni reputation. You see my confusion!

My background is in digital advertising media and digital brand management, with 9 years of experience and I want to grow into a strategic role in consumer experience and brand management, but ideally in digital/tech/ecom brands. I want to work in an English speaking country in Europe.

They both seem to have connections and research budgets dedicated to digital/tech space. UCD students seem to working with top tech brands in Ireland and with retailers as brand manager even in UK.

My concern is also that given my background in media, will tech companies hire me in Ireland or would they prefer more technical background which is usually a significant part of MBA class. In UK, I see more jobs in brand management in consumer goods, which is what my work ex is in. Will Edinburgh fetch me those jobs, there's no evidence on Linkedin.

Your thoughts please.

Thank you

Amid

Thanks Duncan, I was leaning towards UCD only, guess I needed to hear it from an expert. One hears many conflicting views from people around to cause doubt.
Cheers!

100% UCD.

Hi Duncan,

What are your main concerns with Edinburgh in this case? Just curious why it didn't even register 1%!

Thanks!

Primarily its about Ireland over Scotland. There is a super hot tech sector there, and that is your target.  Scotland has some important nodes like space science and fintech but it's just not comparable.

Thanks, Duncan. I saw in an earlier post that you were at Edinburgh yourself and was worried that it may have been a negative experience. I am considering an MBA offer from there so was just curious!

No school is best for everything.  That's why applicants need to ask which school fits their goals rather than just ranking schools generically.
