Manchester Global MBA vs UMass Amherst vs U Illinois iMBA

smc

Hello all,

I'm currently living in South East Asia. I've started my MBA at UMass Amherst online and completed about 25% of my program. I'm happy with the program.

I need to be completed by the end of 2018 and all 3 programs im choosing between can be done within the timeframe. I'm going to likely relocate to Europe or North America in 2019 in a new position within my company. Europe is slightly more likely at this point. I likely will need to studying a DBA or PHD program after this is completed and was looking at these two other programs. The purpose of the MBA is to provide a good platform for long term employment opportunity, further studies, and have a degree that is recognized worldwide. I have 30k to spend on the degree with the Manchester Global MBA just being within reach financially as I can easily get to the Singapore center. The other program I was interested in was the University of Illinois iMBA program. Highly ranked business school and very affordable. Interested in hearing on everyone's thoughts!

Thanks!

I don't know much about UMass Amherst MBA online, I do know they have very strong research in Economics, Management and Computer Science. Being a State University in a obscure location in MA certainly hurts as they have to pair against Harvard or MIT.

I have taken a few courses of iMBA Illinois and I don't know why I just don't gel with the whole teaching. I took a few other courses in different subjects like Economics, Management or IT and don't like a single course or teacher and it is weird because the University is right up there with any respected universities.

I know a couple of people on Manchester MBA global, they do like the course and the travelling.

Do you have a question? Why not complete the UMass degree?

My question is basically this: With the three objectives I have noted above, is the UMass degree the best option? My only major concern is that is it an online degree... I want to pursue further studies, etc.

I think UMass is good enough. You can point to this: http://rankings.ft.com/businessschoolrankings/online-mba-ranking-2017 You will never need to explain wanting a top-three MBA and, since that is the only US school in the top four you can explain it's the most global. More credibly, the UMAss MBA is almost all core courses, and that makes it a better and deeper MBA in many ways than the schools with a compressed core and many electives.

I don't understand why you will need a doctorate, but any masters with a thesis/dissertation will be better than one without for PhD admissions because the school will want to see the potential for a major work of scholarship from you.

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to call the UMass Doctoral program to ask about entrance into their PHD program out of their online MBA program. BTW, to answer your question about the need for this: I will oversee a number of schools and projects including some high ed schools. My leadership feels that this is a necessary requirement.
