Hi All,

I'd like to start my MBA next year. Right now, ESMT & BU are in my spotlight. I'm working as a Manager in a Consultancy in Germany. From what I've seen both MBAs are pretty similar in terms of tution fees and modules so it's pretty hard for me to place one over the other.

While ESMT states to be the #1 Business School in Germany and #7 in Europe (where I live), BU does usually better results in the rankings. Is there someone who has already compared both Business Schools and can give me an overview of his/her results?

Boston ($24.000):
M0 = Online MBA Launch
M1 = Role of the Manager
M2 = Managing with Data
M3 = Leading with Integrity
M4 = Managing Risk
M5 = Marketing
M6 = Innovative Mindset

ESMT Berlin ($24.143 using the discounts):
M0 = General Management
M1 = Decision Taking
M2 = Economics & Marketing
M3 = Accounting & Organization
M4 = Agile Leadership & Entepreneurship
M5 = Technological Change & Negotiations
M6 = Project

Some Remarks:

- I'm looking for a MBA with focus on General Management and Leadership
- My focus is not really to work outside Europe
- GRE ~3.7 (1.4 here in Germany)
- I'm practicing for the TOEFL right now, but I'm guessing it should be somewhere around 100

Thanks for support!

Hi Stuart,

thanks for your feedback. I've checked LinkedIn and it seems that ESMT would give better networking opportunities:

                                            BU                               ESMT
Total Alumni/Students:        334.000                        5.400

Chief Digital Officer:            57 (0.02%)                   9 (0.17%)

Associated Partner:             2 (0.01%)                     1 (0.02%)
Partner:                                5.200 (1.56%)              156 (2.89%)
Partner + Germany:             55 (0.02%)                   95 (1.76%)
2nd Connections + GER:     64 (0.02%)                    300 (5.56%)
Same Company:                  0 (0.00%)                      2 (0.04%)

(sorry for the bad format but it seems I can't post pictures here)

You'd prefer a bigger University in Germany with a stronger Alumni Network over BU/ESMT despite them being ranked higher?

Impressive formatting. Yeah, I think almo0st everyone would advise you to focus on the best available school for your particular goal. WHU might be a better school for consulting. Which of the top schools is closest to you?

PS I had not really looked at the ESMT online MBA but it's well designed and at a very affordable fee. It's basically the same price as an 18-day executive programme I was looking at: https://execed.esmt.berlin/open-programs/advanced-management/executive-transition-program

I live about 1h away from Munich. WHU seems a bit out of budget for me (Online 35k€ / Part Time 43k). ESMT and BU are about 22.5k. My scholarship will only be 15k.

What do you think about the Boston University Online MBA? Looking at the rankings it should be similar to ESMT and also the modules are very similar.

I'm not looking for MBB/T1 Consultancies post MBA but would like to become a Partner at my current company in some years (IT & Management Consultancy).

I don't think rankings matter as much as which well-accredited business schools have the best alumni networks in your target markets. BU has a great MBA that is well discussed here and on the Find MBA Online sister website. However, BU has a small alumni base in the DACH region. WHU is a much stronger school in IT and consulting than ESMT and the added investment is tiny compared to the greater leverage and brand equity.

I had a look at WHU and compared it's LinkedIn Members with ESMT (I would leave the table aside for now). WHU seems to be more focused on finance than ESMT.

5/15 WHU Core Modules are about finance and economy:

- Beating Financial Markets- Financial & Management Accounting- World Economy- Corporate Finance- Economics of Corporate and Financial Strategy

ESMT seems to be more focussed on Leadership & Innovation (maybe I'm wrong) which is something I'm more interested in.
