Edinburgh / Leeds MBA?

Hi All,
I got offers from Leeds and Edinburgh for MBA. Can anyone suggest and advice if they are worth going to considering the current economic drain?
Which one of the two is better?

If I were in your place I would have chosen Edinburgh...Now one may ask why... FT places Leeds above Edinburgh... Well, lemme put it in this way -- "All that glitters is not gold"...

But please weigh your own pros and cons before taking any decision... don't be rash...All the best!!

well, the economist does exactly the opposite - Edinburgh is ranked 55 and leeds 77.

I would advice to check the detailed rank - some interesting information, like: Leeds is ranked at 45 in Number(of students) in jobs three months after graduation.(Edinburgh 75). but in Potential to network Edinburgh is way ahead.

you should always use more then one ranking, and more then one parameter to make your decision.

I don't know what for people particularly in Asian countries go gaga over Leeds. Its just a shade above the average university. Indeed the huge amount Leeds invested for promotion in Asian countries has paid off...

Edinburgh is perhaps one of the finest Universities in the UK. Studying at Edinburgh is a privilege...As far as the Business School is concerned, though Edinburgh cant match with top tier ones but it finds company with Cardiff, Bristol, Henley, Tanaka, Durham, Birmingham etc old and respected B Schools...The only thing in which Leeds can boast that its better than Edinburgh is the quality of student life, which indeed is fabulous...

why do schoolls prefer to post the FT rankings on their website?
so i feel FT rankings are reliable.

Well, it will be a good idea to ask them only!!!

FT rankings are reliable but not full-proof...read the methodologies adopted for ranking...do not blindly see only the numerical rank...also note the KPMG audit year for the data used in the FT rankings...do NOT just view them, rather look closely...nevertheless I think it wont harm if we refer other rankings too...eh?!

Ciao!

i agree, you should always check more then one ranking, as the methodology differs between the different ranking bodies. this way you get a more complete information regarding the school.

if it was a usual course, edinburgh anyday would be far far ahead of leeds.

but we are talking about mba here. forget about eiu because it is the poorest ranking with top and last school in the league about 3% difference between each other.

I tend to go for FT ranking and it is far more reliable although it is by no means an accurate indicator of the quality of MBA.

Leeds business school and leeds university is a decent university. it is not true that it is a dash above the average, maybe true for consolation masters but certainly not MBA.

But leeds is no comparision to edinburgh anyways. that is for sure, i would say after oxford and cambridge, edinburgh as a university is as good as LSE imperial or UCL.

But the business school never live up the the standards of the university. But still i believe they are subtaintially better than leeds in the long term.

The only thing is edinburgh is expensive and for this particular mba course i dont feel that it is that far ahead and people tend to hire MBAs by the name of the business school not the university.

If money is not a problem go for edinburgh if the most you can afford is 15-18 then go for leeds

I am not sure what students life means because each person has their own lifestyle but ceratinly edinburgh is the most exotic city to live in the UK. The arts is wonderful, a lot of things to do and see, the history culture and atmosphere.
Leeds used to be an industrial town so you see a lot of factories and dump sites.

who on earth think factories are more fabalous than castles are beyond me. Edinburgh has all sorts of foods and activities to do so watch your purse. it is about 30% more expensive than living in leeds but i tend to say to enjoy a real lifestyle it is 50% more expensive.

Edinburgh is also only after london in terms of the number of banks so if banking/finance is your career choice then i tend to say edinburgh is better location.

University of Edinburgh is well recognized worldwide as well as by U.S employers. In the US, employers know about Oxford, London LBS, Cambridge, LSE and Edinburgh very well. Even if Edinburgh has the most junk MBA, it would still be a very good program and welcomed by employers worldwide. Ranking does not mean anything, it is just a place to look at schools.

Edinburgh is a much better investment: better outcomes, a better university and a better location for finance and accounting jobs.

Hi Vinay,
No doubt Edinburgh would be a better option among tehse two, however I would also advice you to do some professional qualifications along with your MBA i.e. ACCA, CIMA, ACA etc as this will help you in finding better opportunities in the UK in Finance sector.

you can consider other schools as well. since leeds is not in FT top 100 any more, so i would recommend to opt for an Ft ranked b-school. and also some universities do offer some bursaries. Let me know if you need any advice on scholarships.
