Hi All,
I am new to this post. I have about 3yrs of work experience from one of the top IT companies in India. I have secured an admit in both Bradford and Birmingham universities for MBA Sep 2009 entry.
I would like to know which universities amongst these 2 are good in terms of teaching, recognition in UK, placement services, job prospects etc.
It would be really helpful if someone can throw some light on this, as I am confused right now as in which college to go for.
Thanks,
Supriya

This is not a good guide to go by as Bradford is well respected in terms specific disciplines, but birmingham is better funded and performs well across a broad range of areas. In terms of purely the business school and the MBA, Bradford's business school is probably better respected around the UK and abroad.
MBA rankings are pretty equal (look at the FT) but Bradford does better in terms of salary and diversity.

Thanks Jamie. I contacted few alumni from Bradford and they say its a good one. However, I am in the process of contacting students of Birmingham univ. According to the economist rankings, Bradford is 99 and Birmingham is 67. So, I am really confused.

at the end of the day, don't worry too much, both have good reputations for academic study. I know both cities as well, and to be completely honest i don't like either city centre, but the universities will offer a good year.
on rankings, i think generally these are misleading. Both the FT and the economist are good points of reference, but once you are out of the top 5, then they can be very dubious.

Hi Supriya,
I too got an admit in both of these univ..in fact yest only I got the result for Birmingham..But I was surprised bcos it was mentioned min 5 yrs exp is req for 1 year MBA..I do have only 4 yrs but I applied only for 12 month MBA. I got the the admission confirmation in mail stating the offer has been posted to my address. So I am just waiting for that to confirm if its for one yr programme or 21 month programme. I also feel Birmingham is the best compared to Bradford due to lot of reasons. How about your offer ? Its for 21 month or 12 month MBA ??

Hi karthik,
I have mailed birmi if its 21 or 24 month. waiting for their response.
can some one tell more abt birmingham MBA. what is the main difference betw 12 month, 21 month. because the 12 month is on international business, while 21/ 24 month seems to be more generic and is more the cost also. whats your opinion on this.
regards,
supriya

Supriya,
Both the MBA are same. Since they are asking for min 5 yrs exp criteria, to fulfill that we need to take a preliminary 9 month or 1 yr programme and next sept you ll be studying along with regular MBA intake 2010. So the fees will be Preliminary course fees(1 yr) + Regular MBA fees (Second yr). I met the people from the university over here in chennai and clarified the same. I have 4 yrs of exp so no point for me to take preliminary course .Rather I will work here for one more yr and go to that univ if its worth. But he mentioned me that under exceptional cases they mite take below 5 yrs exp for 1 yr MBA. And I didnt get the offer by post so just waiting to see whether it is 1 yr or 21 month as I applied only for 1 yr MBA.

Answering to the first question - I guess Birmingham is better for finanical programs compared to bradford, they have a specialised program for Global Banking and Finance. I have not seen any universities providing such specialisiaion (correct me if i'm wrong). Bradford, I'm not sure how visible this is on the global arean
Ranking is just one of the indicators, if you have any of your friends pursuing/completed their higher education then it would certainly be worth consulting them about the teaching methodology, the faculty's expertise, the company talks (the corporate discussions conducted by the university) and the faculty's engagement in the classes.
Sorry to start a new topic in this discussion.
Normally how long does it take to get an offer from these universities.

Birumanand

Hi Supriya,
Maybe this will make it simple for you...both B'schools are ranked by the FT and Economist, but you should also take a look at the World University rankings and THES rankings, and compare the standing of Birmingham and Bradford as a University (which doesn't even appear)... also the city of Bradford, is not a place to live for a year, it isn't even a place worth visiting...I would say choose Birmingham or any other similars as Leeds, Nottingham, Bath, or Durham if you have the option...these are all world class schools and universities.
Hope this is useful.
