Hi jovise

Taking the GMAT is a big step for the MBA application i wish you good luck for it. I have given the Gmat only once and i got 640..but i studied for about 4 months prior to the exam.

So, i would like you assess your preparation of only one month. While before you go for the exam do some practise test. The most accurate practice tests is the one on www.mba.com. you can get 2 of them there and do them to get an idea of wht kind of scoring range you would be able to achieve.
Good luck with your gmat though and hope you do good!!

In my opinion there is no need to join any classes for GMAT preparation! Self study is enough! The coaching classes will unnecessarily charge you hefty fees!

I don't know about this. I think some people are naturally good at testing, and for those people, coaching classes are probably not important.

But for others, the direction and motivation that coaching gives can be beneficial.

Hi Guys,
I have 9.5 yrs work ex in Hospitality & ITES. I have now decided to do an MBA. The first step obviously is GMAT. I have not been in touch with books since almost 9 yrs and will really make a fresh start.
Any tips on how to prepare for GMAT. How much time shall i devote.? When should i give GMAT.? There are some univ who have their last dates in Mar/Apr 10. Is it sufficient time from now till Mar to prepare.
Pls note i am currently working as well. Thanks.

I believe that it may be a good idea to prepare for a month or better. I think I will use Knewton because it is a fully on line program, fairly inexpensive and received good reviews (I believe in a BusinessWeek article). I also signed up on mba.com and downloaded the practice tests to use.

I like you have a long work history and recent Baccalaureate classes and I still plan on doing some preparation. I should add that I am a very good test taker still this is too important to approach nilly willy.
Good luck!

it is difficult to answer the questions regarding the time to devote to preparation - you should devote as much time as possible, but also avoid overdoing it, as this can lead to higher stress levels which can impair your score! try to see whats best for you - a course has the advantage of giving a frame to your studies(i, for one, need such a thing as i am a bit lazy ;-) ) but it can be annoying for people that are a bit faster then the average Joe.
learning yourself can be hard, but some people can be really good at setting goals for self study. i think a mixed approach can be good - a not so intensive course combined with self learning on the net/with books.

as for the time frame - IMO till march you will have sufficient time to prepare for it.

lots of luck to you!

Hello,
In addition to the comments that the others have posted here, I would like to share my experience. I realized that keeping focus for the entire duration of the test is a major factor to a good score. It is difficult to maintain the same level of concentration, focus and motivation for the entire duration. My suggestion would be to take at least 5 practice tests before your final GMAT without any break (I mean while taking the tests and not 5 tests without a break ;)) That will help in focussing better
All the best
Cheers

good advise about taking the test a few times in a raw - one of the most difficult things about GMAT is keeping focused for the duration of the test.
another suggestion i would like to add - if you have the time, i would go for a gradual approach: start by learning an hour a day, and try to keep it regular - say one hour a day before work/after work. with time, increase the number of hours per day gradually. this helps to get in the proper mind set for this long test, without breaking you! there are some people who are able to "through themselves in" from the first moment, but i have always found it difficult.....
