620 GMAT score (V 39, Q 36) - should I retake?

anyeong

In need of some advice folks!

Just took the GMAT. I studied off and on for it for the last few months. I got a 620, and my score isn't balanced I don't think, at least percentile-wise (42 Quant percentile, 80 Verbal percentile).

I'm from the USA and have 2 yrs experience in healthcare human resource management and, in South Korea, 3 yrs experience in education management. I have a 3.0 gpa and my major was business admin.

I'm looking to apply to the following schools: Coppead, EDHEC, Cape Town, Antai Jiao Tong and Tufts Fletcher School MIB program. I'm interested in management in emerging markets.

My question is: should I retake the GMAT? It was my first time taking the test. I do have a decently diverse profile, all put together, but I'm worried my gpa and gmat score will be too low to gain admission.

Cape Town is where I'd most like to go.

Any advice? Thoughts?

Really appreciate it.

Hi ,

I think whether you should retake or not mainly depends upon whether the college you applying needs only this score or better one .

Honestly , after looking at your score .. I would strongly recommend you to retake and improve your quant score . your Verbal 39 is a great score...:-) But again , if you are not strong at quant ( in general ), my suggestion is enroll for a quant course or practice questions from various forum such as GMAT club..

I feel quite envious looking at your score ...:-) I have quant score of 48 but verbal < 20...

Hey

Thanks for the reply!

Sorry, I made a mistake. My Q is 39 and V is 36.

I would like to improve both of them actually :)

If we are talking minimum score needed, I'm good for all of the schools. But I'm not sure if I should apply with my score as is or if I should re-take. I think I could improve the score by focusing on Quant improvement, but I'm not sure if I should postpone applying to do so.

Any other insight appreciated!

That Quant score of 48...I like the sound of that!

Hi marrrrrrrv,

I scored a 680[Q49,V34] and am still debating a retake.. Only to be able to apply to better schools or get more scholarship.
I'm thinking of EDHEC too.How keen are you on this school..?Also, have you any knowledge of French..?

Thanks,
Mallika

You should both apply with your current score and retake.

Hey Mallika,

680 is a decent score I think!

As for EDHEC, I think the school is a really good option, and the rankings don't really accurately reflect the quality of the program. I also personally prefer the one-year option of EDHEC. What do you think?

As for my French, I don't speak it much, but I do speak Spanish and also have taken French courses before so I think I'd be alright to pick it up.

Hey Duncan

Thanks for the advice. You recommend doing this for all of the schools? Or just EDHEC?

Given the tight timing (or are you applying for January??) then apply ASAP for any school that starts this year. Tell them you will retake and they can maybe give you a target score.

Hi Anyeong,

I have decided to apply with my current score and instead focus on learning French. I'm planning for Sept 2016.
I'm done with A1.1 and have just started with A1.2 and I'm hoping this might suffice :|
I'm picking up French pretty well I think and am keeping my fingers crossed what with the whole Syria thing in France this year!
Have you found out or spoken to anyone who's landed good roles post MBA 2015 from EDHEC?
I saw this thread only today!!
Have you applied already..?

Best,
Mallika Hunsur
