Top MBA with average school and job?

I'm want to get into a top mba program, but am an "average" candidate. I went to the University of Pittsburgh and got a 3.29 GPA. And I have 1.4 years marketing experience for a midsized company.

What would you do if you were in my position and wanted to get into a top MBA? I feel that I'm at a dead end in my marketing job. My long term goal is to do something entrepreneurial and, for that, I feel you need to know people and get more experiences.

If you want to get into a top MBA program, the one thing you could do is to get another couple years of work experience. The sweet spot in terms of work experience at top schools is around 3-5 years, give or take. For example, students in the current Harvard cohort have about 3.5 years of work experience; at Stanford it's four years even. This is true for programs outside of the US as well - at London Business School, MBA students have 5.7 years of work experience, and at INSEAD the average is about 6.

Over the next few years, look for opportunities to thrive within your personal and professional life. You'll want to have promotions, advancements, etc. to point to in your application essays.

Then, you'll want to get a great score on the GMAT - 700+ would be a good score to aim for to get into the top MBA programs.
