Helping finding the best MBA for a younger Latin-American professional who want to move to Europe

Luis Lima

Hi everyone, hope all of you are well,

I'm a 27 years old chemical engineer, I'm living in Chile but I'm from Venezuela. At this moment I'm looking for an online MBA at an European BS with some face-to-face classes (1 or 2 months) to take in 2023 or early 2024.

Although I'm an engineer, I'm working as a Project Controller with a very business oriented scope, my goals for my career is go through consulting for some years in order to be prepared for high management roles. I speak three languages (Spanish, English and Portuguese).

I'm looking for an European school because I want to move to Europe, preferably Spain, Portugal or UK.

At the moment I have been accepted in EADA, EADA was my first option because the funding, I don't have 50k EUR to spend in a study, most of the money will come from a loan and I expect to have a better job and the end of the MBA to pay it.

My main concerns are the funding (do really worth take IE instead of EADA? It's almost the double cost), the opportunities that the MBA will give to me and an online program that could offer the most similar face-to-face environment.

Therefore, my options are these:
- EADA (better price and chance for scholarship, some weeks in Spain and Asia)
- IE (second option in Spain, chances to get and scholarship and can take some classes in Madrid)
- Hult (offer a good online program with annual electives, good experience in Dubai and London and scholarship)
- Imperial College BS (prestige and also a good scholarship for LA students)

Hope that you can help with this.

THANKS A LOT TO EVERYONE!

Can you say something more specific about the kind of consulting you want to do? I think it's very unlikely that a top consulting firm will hire someone with no prior experience in a consulting firm from an online MBA. If you don't have EU citizenship (many Latin Americans in the EU do) then a full-time programme will allow to take advantage of favourable visa conditions that many European countries have for their graduates.

Hi Duncan, thanks for your response!

I´ve done consulting in some energy and mining projects but only for a few years (I'm working in a Consulting Service company but in a supporting role). I really want to do strategic thinking and solution consultancy. Although, I really like the control role and would take any opportunity to move to another country after finishing the MBA.

The problem with the full-time program is the money, I can not afford been one or two years without working, not only for me but also for my family.

Thanks!

I think an inexpensive or free MSc taught full time in the EU will be more likely to lead to work in the EU than an online MBA. Take a look at mastersportal.com and use the filter for fees.

PS top MBA programmes have excellent loan programmes that will cover your costs and your immediate family during your study.

Thanks, Duncan, for your advice.

I have taken many comments from people in LinkedIn that have done online MBAs and they explained me the difficult to get a work visa without studying in the country. They recommend the online MBA to get better jobs here in Latam (if anybody is interested)
Now, I change my scope to find an MBA or MSc full time in a top school with a good scholarship, I'm preparing myself to get a good GMAT and IELTS and now I'm seeking for opportunities in countries with work permit after the Master completion and without too many language barriers.
I made a spreadsheet with many schools and countries and find that the best opportunities are in the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium for MBA and Spain for MSc in Finance
For Belgium (Vlerick) I see that the language could be a problem because I don't want to learn French or German but many people in Belgium speak and work in English.
In the Netherlands (RSM or TIAS) the language barrier could be avoid for some time because the % of English-speaking people there, I made a quick search in LinkedIn for Controllers jobs and only 4 of 20 request Dutch as a must, and for 11/20 was a advantage, but I have doubts about the placement of RSM or TIAS.
Now, the UK, it probably brings the easy path with the language and multiples schools and scholarships, but the top schools are too expensive, maybe here you can recommend me a school with good placement and low tuition fees.
Final, Spain, here could be difficult to get the work permit because is not guarantee by law but it will be a lot easier for me pay a MSc in Finance or Strategy in ESADE or EADA, they are not too expensive and could give me the chance to work in the EU for some years to save some money and them go to an EMBA in a top school outside Spain for better salary.
The last option that I have been working on its a Dual-degree MBA with the University of Chile and Cranfield, that program will give me the chance to keep working for some months and them get a triple crown MBA in the UK although is not from a top school and I don’t know the possible placement.
Sorry if I wrote too much but I still thank you and everyone who reads this for your guidance!!!

Take a look at: The sad facts about scholarships http://www.find-mba.com/board/37055 Would you rather attend a worse school with worse outcomes, but get a scholarship, or borrow more to attend an excellent school?

Also see: Do you need to speak the local language? www.find-mba.com/board/34713 Why would someone hire you over someone who also spoke the local business language(s)? For example, in Belgium, Flemish people have a huge advantage in the labour market because they are more likely to be bi-lingual or trilingual.

Thanks Duncan,

I have read both articles and that reinforce my idea of borrowing more $ in order to get accepted in a better school (I want to be in the best possible) with also trying to get a scholarship (f.e. Imperial has Latin-American talent scholarship).  The language sure will be a problem in many countries, so I will try in UK and Spain as my first options.
Now, talking about programs, I want to ask your opinion about doing a MSc in Finance or International business in ESADE or EADA, both in English.
And a second question is about an MBA in UK, what do you think about Cranfield? Is there another school with good placement that you could recommend (not the higher price like LBS)
Thanks again!!

Cranfield full-time degrees have been falling as it pivots back to executive programmes (where it leads the UK market for the senior leadership apprenticeships). You can see my approach to alternatives in these two posts.
 Take a look at

Best MBAs for international students' placement http://www.find-mba.com/board/41143

The UK and Australia have almost identical unemployment rates. I am not sure why you think jobs are more limited in the UK, or that the UK is overpopulated. There are roughly three times more vacant jobs in the UK than in Australia.

Louis bienvenidos. Puedes escribirme en español si lo prefieres.

Be realistic in terms of finance. Any loans taken out today will have a considerable interest ( worst inflation in years) that you would need to pay eventually. Duncan is somehow right but I disagree with the idea of getting a loan just for the sake of a good university. Always research graduate opportunities. If it is a specialised pathway do your research about job opportunities and do something that will fullfil you. Don't do something that you would regret for the rest of your life.

have personally applied for imperial college and durham and I was offered unconditional offers for both places. However imperial college is considerably more expensive. The specialist route offered by imperial college didn't do it for me so I opted for durham instead which offered. Perhaps Imperial has better networking than Durham but this is only 1 factor to take into account.

Pvt msg me if you want to discuss further.

Saludos cordiales
