EMBA at HEC or ESCP

The ESCP EMBA is ranked much better than the Essec-Mannheim program. More importantly, where do you want to develop your network?

Yes but regarding other rankings than FT, ESSEC-MANNHEIM is ahead (QS joint program, The Economist, Eduniversal).
I also have a look on the European Business School ranking and ESSEC and MANNHEIM are better ranked than ESCP.
Usually in France we consider:
1 : INSEAD
2 : HEC
3: ESSEC
4 : ESCP
My goal is to develop my network in Europe and Asia.
Thanks for your reply.

ESSEC has a better network in Asia because of its campus and links there. And with two schools you get a bigger network. However, the ESCP EMBA has a more senior cohort.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. Personally, I would pick ESSEC and Mannheim.

Hi,
I might be in same situation (ESCP vs HEC), so I would be interested in the final conclusion of the topic author.
My point of view is that HEC has a stronger reputation than any other schools (except Insead), and it opens more doors. This is especially true if you want to work in France, probably less at international. French companies do not really look at rankings, they are still focused on school brand, and here HEC is the winner.
Other than that, ESCP has a very nice program (maybe better than HEC), but no career track.

@Duncan by RSVP you mean ESCP I guess ;-). However I am quite surprised by this information.
HEC is obviously the winner when considering the brand.
Regarding the network, don't know if you will be considered as a real member of the network by all the MiM (Grande Ecole) alumni?
For this reason I am more in favor of the ESSEC-MANNHEIM network.

I don't get your comment about the network. When you are graduated you are member of the full network. Do you mean the other alumni could ignore or underestimate you? In that case it could be for any school I guess.

yes that's my point!
Except maybe for the Business School whose flagship programs are MBA or EMBA like INSEAD.

@Duncan, despite your « ranking » you still consider Essec-Mannheim as a better option? I have a short experience, 8 years only.

I think this totally has to be about your goals and which schools fits best. That is more important than any ranking. My order is based on pre EMBA salary.

Hi,

As an Alumni of the HEC EMBA here are a few things to consider

1) Some people get confused when they apply to this EMBA and think it is ranked (Only the TRIUM is ranked). Even in the first weeks of class some still think it is the case.

2)The program is focused on entrepreneurship and innovation and on becoming an entrepreneur a.k.a startups... So if your goal is to get to HQ this might not be the place...

3) You will want to change careers after this program even if this was not your initial intent. There is also a high chance you will want to divorce or leave your spouse and maybe even have an affair on the side. This EMBA will shake your fundamental vision of how you see things. (You can mark my word on the above items as I saw it happen to multiple people during the program)

4) It is all about how you market your diploma after you graduate...

Very useful comment. Two of the guys in my six person study group broke up with their partners during the Executive MBA, so I don't think this reality is specific to HEC. Students want to radically change their lives, but partners often don't .

Although not specific to HEC, I think it is specific to top school programs. It goes to show how profoundly they can change your way of viewing things, and your life goals
An EMBA at a random unaccredited school, or even an accredited but unranked one, will probably not have such effect.
(and don't worry you don't have to break up if you don't want to! haha)

Yes interesting comments indeed.
Hi KevinM could you maybe give more background why you selected HEC? What did the program change for you?
You are saying this is for entrepreneurs so I guess you created your own company after that?
Thanks in advance

And another question do you think the fact it is not officially ranked is really a problem as it still benefits HEC brand?
Thanks again ;-)

The ranking is a symptom not a cause. For reasons well discussed on this board, the HEC EMBA does not attract students or employers from the corporate sector. HEC is a great school, but, unlike Trium, its EMBA is known as a collection of unusual students aiming at entrepreneurship.

It was the speed of how they handled my file and offered me to get into a program that would finish in 18 months. In reality, you can say it is 13 months and the rest of the time you are working on your Capstone (A.K.A your startup..). Some of their modules enable you just to come every two months on average for intensive sessions without ever interrupting your job. As an example, every year there is at least one person from Australia who will fly all the way to Paris to do this EMBA.

You are saying this is for entrepreneurs so I guess you created your own company after that?

Yep, you are correct. However, one of the complaints from some students that this program is too focused on young startups such as ''Facebook'' type companies. Some class members who have several years of experience wished that the program would also focus on such things are taking over mature businesses and flipping them around.

This is not always true. In my class, there were a couple of people who were sent by their employers to do this specific program. This lucky batch had everything paid, so they did not need to worry about the fees.

Also, if you go into this EMBA program only go into the English modular program as this is the most international one. You need to speak French to go into the other modules but avoid them as you will end up with a bunch of Frenchmen who will look at things only from the French perspective.

My other issue is that HEC Paris still needs to work on making this program more international. They are making a lot of efforts on this, but they still need to keep on working. As an international student, I did not care about the methods and successes of a French company but wanted things from a global perspective.

If you look at it from an evil way, it is easy to confuse the TRIUM and this EMBA so if someone will search they will see HEC PARIS EMBA being ranked at the top and they could BS that they went to a top EMBA program...

For me, it is all about how you sell yourself, and I focus on selling the point that I attended a top business school in Europe.

I strongly advise against BS with your future employers...
Presenting your school, your studies, and outcomes in such a way to focus on the parts that will benefit the employer is one thing. BS is another
If your program is not ranked, don't mention it. Instead you can focus how well ranked is the School (it is)

Just say EMBA from HEC Paris. Is good enough and impressive enough really!
(I know that is not your intent KevinM. my post is intended as general guideline)
