Heard good opinions of the school, being called MIT, Columbia of Asia, etc.
Here is my situation, i'm in 3rd yr of analyst program at a boutique VC shop in the bay area.
I am being told to go get MBA in order to move up the ladder. Basically I am one of hundreds if not thousands in the same position in and around San Fran. the standard avenue of going to Berkeley or Stanford does not guarantee anything anymore, and costs are high, especially the 2 years out of work part. VC is about to go bust in the US, and only region with, immediat, every bright future is Asia.
getting back to HKUSt, i've seen numerous comments praising the Finance program, but I am more interested in the reserach/development going on at the Institute for the advanced study which they have designed to operate the same way as Princeton's. In fact that is how I heard of this school in the first place, people in SV calling it the MIT of Asia, with great future because of adequate funding and abillity to attract top teaching/research talent.
PLEASE NO COMMENTS ON FINANCE! does anybody have experience with the institute for advanced study at HKUST?any mba applicants/graduates with VC profiles/interests from HKUST?
thanx, Amit

since VC/PE is Finance, I do not see how HK UST\'s excellent reputation would not be an advantage?
Texas Pacific Group (TPG) one of the largest PE/VC firms in the world recruits on campus for its\' Asia divisions. Multiple grads have gone there in recent years. There are also multiple requests for CVs from smaller local VC firms. Also some of the recruiting from major I-banks have been focused on VC this year.
since you probabaly already have good VC experience, modelling-due dilligence etc, MBA from Asia would certainly make you stand out and if you play your cards right following the graduation, you would probably do better in the long term than someone going to Cal or stanford.
Look at the Chair and the rest of advisory board at the Institute for Advanced Study, everyone either has a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal. HK USt is not called the MIT of Asia for nothing!

The Institute for Advanced Study is relatively new, as the school itself is only 17 years old. Here are few comments about it..

The Institute for Advanced Study is a project in the making, when it takes off for good, HK UST will be deserving to be called the MIT of Asia

the ultimate testament to HK UST's Finance excellence must be the fact that NYU has chosen them for partnership.
