Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management has announced that it will launch an Executive MBA program with a focus on healthcare.
The new program, which is offered in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic medical center, aims at helping senior administrators, practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals navigate this evolving, complex industry.
“Health care is in the midst of an unprecedented transformation and is changing how we deliver care to patients and how we are reimbursed for services,” says Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Delos M. “Toby” Cosgrove.
Indeed, healthcare organizations are often expected to produce better outcomes at lower costs. "This is putting a lot of pressure on providers to look at how they’re organized and how they do business," Cosgrove continues.
"Meeting these new demands will require a new outlook and a new set of skills by health-care leaders.”
To address these evolving needs, the curriculum in Weatherhead's new EMBA program will cover a range of topics, mainly through specialized healthcare courses like "Health Economics and Strategy," "Health Decision Making and Analytics," and "Health Finance." Also included will be course modules that address general business topics, such as "Managerial Marketing" and "Business Statistics and Quantitative Analysis."
The new EMBA will be delivered through 16 three-day residency sessions. The entire program will take 20 months to complete, and will also include a 10-day long international study trip, where students will visit different countries to learn about global healthcare models. Additionally, the program will feature an applied project, where participants will be able to apply the learning to a real-world situation in their own organizations.
Similar EMBA programs in healthcare are offered by a range of US-based business schools, including the one-year Executive MBA for Healthcare Leadership from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville's Haslam College of Business, as well as the Healthcare Management Executive MBA from of the University of Texas at Dallas' Jindal School of Management. Yale's School of Management offers a specialization in healthcare as part of its EMBA program.
To apply for the Cleveland Clinic-Weatherhead EMBA, interested candidates should generally have at least 10 years of experience in healthcare. The program is set to launch in September, and applications are due by June 15th.
