Should a law student do a MIB/MBA?

Hi guys,

I am a law student and my major at university is international trade law.
I set my target as becoming a lawyer in the field of international business. However, after 4 years at university and 1 year working in law firm, I recognize that I lack knowledge in business which is important to make a comprehensive legal advice (concerning both legal and commercial perspective). So, I am thinking of engaging in a master course in business focussing on int'l commerce after an LL.M program (I will take part in the LL.M this year).

So, is a MIB/MBA suitable for my case and do such courses accept a law student without experience in business administration.

Thanks in advance

Yes, that is exactly what an MBA and many MIM degrees are aimed at doing. In German-speaking countries in particular, there are programmes for people with undergraduate business degrees.

Thank you for your information, Duncan

I have found some information on MBA/JD programs and they may fit my career path. However, the requirements for these programs seem quite high and it is not easy to get in.
In fact, I will have about two years to consider and prepare for application for a course like that.

My target is a good school (not necessary to be a top university) in the USA/Europe with chances to get a high scholarship. I am from an Asian country and my financial conditions do not allow me to study abroad without a full scholarship.

Here is some information on my background:
- GMAT: I have not taken yet
- Experience: 1.5 year of part-time internship and 1 year of full-time job in law firm
- Undergraduate:
* Major: Law (in Vietnam)
* GPA: 3.78/4.0
* Extracurricular activities: some contests and research on law, leader in some student clubs on law, volunteer activities
- Master: international business law (in Japan) (actually, I just have been admitted to this program and it will start in 10, 2017)

So, any information, advice and experience in this kind of program is highly appreciated.
Thank you very much

That depends on where that law student sees themselves in the future. Not all lawyers need this type of expertise but in your case it does sound like it may be very useful. (It is not unheard of in any way for lawyers to get these degrees but even in commercial law those lawyers are still a minority, so getting a business degree with give you a certain edge)

If you have less than 2 years of working experience you will not be eligible for MBA programs, however, which leaves you with MiM programs.
