Civil law lawyer - MBA or LLB?

boaso

Hello, I am a lawyer from a civil law country. I am thinking about which would be the wiser option, an MBA or an LLB from a university in a common law country. Generally, the cost of an MBA degree tends to be much higher than that of an LLB in the same country. Do you think an MBA is always more valuable than an LLB? Thanks.

If you are already a lawyer, you will be qualified at a higher level than the LLB. What can it add? An MBA will always be more useful for someone who has qualified as a lawyer.

How about an executive LLM? http://www.law.northwestern.edu/academics/llmexec/

My feeling is that in practice, these two degrees serve two vastly different purposes. An MBA usually helps people transition from one career field to another (or from one place to another), and gain a foothold for management-level jobs.

And an LLB, which is a bachelor's-level degree, is a first professional degree and is intended for much younger, less-experienced people.

If you are already practicing law, perhaps a more comparable program to an MBA would be a JD or an LLM - which I believe are used functionally by lawyers to get some international experience, exposure to other legal systems, and other law specializations.

But only in very rare cases will you be able to leverage a new law degree to land a lawyer-level job in another country. An MBA from an accredited business school would be a much better choice, if international mobility was your goal.
