Does anybody have any advice for me?
I work in the middle office in the Atlanta branch of a large financial firm. I've been here for about 4 years and generally enjoy the work.
But I'm starting to see people around me peel off to do their MBAs. One by one it seems like everybody's doing something - leaving for a full-time program or trying to wedge an online program into what are already busy days.
I'm wondering if something like this would be worth doing. I don't necessarily want to leave the front office, and I certainly don't want to do more into a hardcore analyst-type role, but I could see how building up my soft skills could lead to a more lucrative career path in a more client-facing role.
Another question would be where. Georgia State has a part-time MBA, which I guess I could fit into my schedule. But I'm wondering if there's any benefit in going to a place like New York, where I could see how Wall Street firms worked - not to mention how being at a school like NYU or Columbia wouldn't hurt.
Thoughts and/or advice?
Do I really need an MBA?

MBAs are options but to move into the sort of role you're talking about a full-time MBA at a top school would be more effective than a part-time MBA, especially at solid but less than stellar school.

Check the MBA programs and their salary statistics to see what kind of increase you'd be looking at for the investment. My guess is that strictly in financial terms, it would be worth it.
I would definitely consider spreading your wings a bit - the Georgia State program is a decent, accredited program, but you would really get more out of a ranked program, especially in the field you're in. It doesn't necessarily have to be New York (although Columbia and Stern would be good choices,) but also consider the other top-tier schools like Booth, Wharton, Harvard, etc.

Thank you both for your advice. It seems like I need to further clarify my goals. I think that some experience in NYC, especially with an internship. I was looking at the NYU internship reports, and it seems like quite a few students intern with finance/investment banking/etc. kinds of firms. I think that would be beneficial for me.

MBA is a degree that helps in adding value to your current position, thus people who are already experienced in related to their work field then it generally helps them in getting the desired position & salary they want, As you already are a part of financial firm. I would suggest you to do your MBA in Finance from a recognized university. May be a 1 year or a part time MBA for 2 years are the best options thus choose which ever you find convenient.
